One or Two Bedrooms? Choosing Apartments for Rent in Wilson, NC for Your First Solo Lease

Woman viewing an apartment with a bedroom and a separate room furnished as a home office.

If you are signing your first lease on your own, a one-bedroom is usually the smarter starting point among apartments for rent in Wilson, NC. A two-bedroom earns its extra rent only when you will use that second room every week, as a real office, a guest room that actually gets guests, or space for a future roommate.

At Oasis at Heritage, we have both layouts under one roof, so you can compare them side by side. To talk through which one fits your budget, reach out to our leasing team or call (252) 302-4970.

Is a one-bedroom or two-bedroom better for a first solo lease?

For most first-time solo renters, the one-bedroom wins. It costs less every month, takes less furniture to fill, and still gives you plenty of room for one person.

Our one-bedroom, The Heritage, runs about 818 square feet with one bath. The Tar Heel two-bedroom is about 1,176 square feet with two full baths. That gap of roughly 358 square feet is real, but it is mostly a second bedroom and a second bathroom, not a bigger living room.

So think about your actual week. If you just landed a job at the Bridgestone plant or Wilson Medical Center and you work long or rotating shifts, you may spend most of your home time cooking, sleeping, and doing laundry. A one-bedroom covers that comfortably.

You can compare both layouts on our one, two, and three bedroom floor plans page, which shows each plan in 3D.

How much more space does a two-bedroom really give you?

A two-bedroom gives you a full extra room and a second bathroom, and that is about it. The kitchen and living area feel similar in both layouts, so the question is what you would do with that extra door.

Plenty of things come standard in both. Every home here has a gourmet kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, a washer and dryer in the unit, nine-foot ceilings, a walk-in closet, and a private balcony. You are not giving up those comforts by going smaller.

Where the two-bedroom costs more is not only the rent. An empty second room tends to stay empty, or it slowly fills with boxes. Furnishing it properly means a bed, a dresser, and maybe a desk, and that trip to Target or Lowe's on Raleigh Road Parkway adds up fast when you are also buying your first couch and your first full set of pots and pans.

Do you really need a second bedroom for guests or a home office?

Many first-time renters do not, because the community already covers part of that need. If you work from home a couple of days a week, our business lounge, coffee bar, and free Wi-Fi in the common areas give you a place to take calls that is not your bedroom.

Guests are the harder call. A dedicated guest room is nice, but it is a room you pay for every month whether anyone sleeps in it or not. A good sleeper sofa in a one-bedroom handles the occasional weekend visitor just fine.

When family does come to town, you will probably spend most of the visit out anyway: dinner in the Downtown Wilson Arts and Historic District, a walk past the whirligigs, then back to your place to sleep. Count honestly how many nights a year a guest room would get used. If the answer is fewer than ten, a one-bedroom is likely the better buy.

How do you match a floor plan to your budget?

Start with the real monthly rent of each layout today, then add a little for the extra space you would need to cool, light, and furnish. The difference between the two plans changes with move-in dates and current specials, so check our apartments for rent in Wilson before you decide.

We recently helped a young man who was moving out of his parents' house for the first time. He came in set on a two-bedroom so he would have a place for guests to stay.

When we compared his budget to the costs of the different units, he came to his own realization. His family probably would not be staying over that much. A one-bedroom was the more practical choice, and it left room in his budget for everything else that comes with a first apartment.

The two-bedroom still makes sense if you expect a roommate or partner within the year. Two full baths make sharing much easier.

What should you check when you tour each floor plan?

Tour both layouts back to back if you can. Walking through The Heritage and then The Tar Heel in the same visit answers more than any photo or square footage number.

Bring the measurements of your bed and couch. Stand in the second bedroom and picture exactly what goes in it. Open the closets, check the light in the living room, and ask how rent on each plan compares for the move-in date you want.

Our office is open Monday through Saturday, with hours until 7:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so you can come by after work. When you are ready to see them in person, schedule a tour of our floor plans. Questions first? Contact the Oasis at Heritage leasing office or call (252) 302-4970, and we will help you pick the layout that fits your first place.
